Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die gouge on lower vest.  Die scratch running NNW from best to left of the 1 in the date.  Curving die scratch in the field to the right of the front fold of hair.  Vertical die scratches behind the neck.  Die scratches in front of Lincoln’s temple.  Strong die scratches parallel to the rim above D in GOD.  Die scratch parallel to the rim to the right of E in WE.  Reverse:  None noted.

1940 1¢ WDDO-002          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  Very strong Class VI extra thickness shows on all digits of the date, especially the lower 9, the letters of LIBERTY, and the letters of IGWT.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A short die gouge protrudes from the top right of the 0 in the date.  Vertical die scratches can be found in front of the eye.  Reverse:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1940 1¢ WDDR-004 with fairly strong extra thickness to EPU, the dots, both wheat ears and stems, the outer letters of USA, and the upper letters of ONE.  See that listing for additional details.

Description:  An extremely close spread towards the rim shows on GOD and WE.    

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Faded diagonal die scratches show in the field below GOD.  Light vertical die scratches run through the 9 in the date.  Vertical die scratches show in front of Lincoln’s forehead.  A series of vertical die scratches show behind Lincoln’s lower hair.  Reverse:  A series of vertical die scratches show above the letters UN in UNITED.  A vertical die scratch shows to the right of the upper T in CENT.  A series of horizontal die scratches run through the letters TES in STATES and from the lower T in CENT.  A mostly horizontal die scratch runs west from the lower first S in STATES.  Horizontal die scratches show to the right of the last A in AMERICA.

Description: A doubled eyelid shows to the east of the normal eyelid.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A curved die scratch runs south between the 1 and 9 in the date.  A diagonal die scratch runs through the central opening of the 9 of the date.  A cluster of die gouges show in the field below Lincoln’s chin.  A series of horizontal die scratches run through the rear shoulder fold of Lincoln’s jacket.  Light, concentric die scratches run from the back of Lincoln’s bust below LIBERTY.  A die gouge (dot) shows behind the back of Lincoln’s bust well below the letters RT in LIBERTY.  Faded, diagonal die scratches run through the letters G and O in GOD.  A series of light horizontal die scratches run through WE in the motto.  Reverse:  Light, vertical die scratches run north from the left wheat tip.  A diagonal die scratch runs through the upper L in PLURIBUS.  A series of vertical die scratches show between the O and N in ONE.  Multidirectional die scratches show between the E in ONE and T in CENT.  A long, mostly vertical die scratch runs through the second T in STATES.  Light vertical die scratches run through the lowest part of the left wheat stem.

Description:  Doubling shows as a close clockwise spread on the second T in TRUST, date, eyelid, lower front of bust, and LIBE.

Die Markers:  Stage A:  Two vertical die scratches are present between 9 and 4.  Die scratch runs through upper TRU extending almost to E in WE.  Die scratch runs southwest from lower right O in GOD.  Short, heavy die scratch SSW from underside of the beard.  Short, strong die scratch SSW from back of the lips.  Stage B:  Die scratches between 9 and 4 and through TRU are almost gone.  Heavier die scratches remain.   Reverse:  The reverse is a doubled die listed as WDDR-013. Stage A:  Two die scratches run from upper right E to lower left P in EPU.   Short die scratch southwest from center bar of E in CENT to the vertical bar.  Die scratch east from lower S in PLURUBUS.  Die gouge inside upper N in CENT.  Stage B:  Die scratches between E and P are gone.  Other markers are weaker.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A series of diagonal die scratches run from Lincoln’s lower chin into the 1 in the date.  A series of diagonal die scratches run SE from Lincoln’s eye, eyebrow and lower nose.  Light, diagonal die scratches run through the letters ERTY in LIBERTY.  A long, concentric die scratch runs close to the rim from the lower L in LIBERTY to below the VDB initials.  Diagonal die scratches run between the D in GOD and the W in WE.  A wavering die scratch connects the lower N in IN with the lower G in GOD.  A series of horizontal die scratches run through GOD.  A hashmarked pattern of die scratches show to the right of Lincoln’s hairline.  Reverse:  The reverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1940 1¢ WDDR-020.  A series of vertical die gouges (or possible planchet issues) run through the letters E and S in STATES.  A diagonal die scratch shows in the field between the right edge of the left wheat and the O in OF.  Swirling die scratches show in the filed below OF and first A in AMERICA.  Swirling die scratches show in the field below the letters RICA in AMERICA.  A diagonal die die scratch runs SW from the upper last A in AMERICA.

Description:  A strong Class II spread towards the center shows on EPU, the dots, both wheat ears, and both wheat stems.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A short, vertical die scratch can be found just to the right of the top of the T in LIBERTY.  A die scratch extends WNW from the center of the 1st T in TRUST.  Obverse Stage B:  The LIBERTY die scratch is still visible, but the TRUST die scratch is now gone.  Reverse Stage A:  Numerous die scratches run SW from between the E PLU of E PLURIBUS.  A strong die scratch runs south to north to the right of the E in ONE.  A die scratch runs NNE from the inside bottom of the C in CENT.  Reverse Stage B:  All Stage A die markers are still visible except for the die scratch to the right of the E in ONE.

Description: Extra thickness shows on all outer devices.  Separation lines show on the upper left and right wheat tips and some of the wheat grains.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1940 1¢ WDDO-002.  See that variety for additional details.  Reverse:  A die gouge touches the center right side of the 2nd U in UNUM.  A die gouge can be found under the right side of the M in UNUM.  The surface is pitted between the top of the left wheat ear and the rim.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Strong die gouges are present at the rim near N in IN and G in GOD.  Numerous light die scratches run roughly east to west through and around WE with a stronger die scratch running under E and the first T in TRUST.  Reverse:  A die scratch runs south from C in AMERICA.  A small die scratch runs NE/SW in the lower D in UNITED.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Die scratches run roughly north to south at the neck. Reverse:  Strong die gouges are present above I and through the top of U in PLURIBUS.  Die gouges are present between the right wheat ear and second M in UNUM.  A die scratch runs SSW from the right side of M in AMERICA.  Several die scratches run NNE from ES in STATES.

Description:  Moderate extra thickness shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and both wheat tips.  Light separation lines show on many areas of the right wheat stalk.  

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is a doubled die listed in the Wexler files as 1940 1¢ WDDO-016.  A light die crack runs along the tail of the 9 in the date.  Worn vertical die scratches show below Lincoln’s chin.  A short heavy die scratch runs south from the tip of Lincoln’s nose.  A diagonal die crack runs through the VDB initials.  Two worn about vertical die scratches show near the rim above the L in LIBERTY.  A series of vertical die scratches show above the Y in LIBERTY.  Worn horizontal die scratches run through GOD.  Diagonal die gouges run through and in the field left of WE.  Reverse:  A vertical die scratch runs south from the lower right curve of the O in ONE.  A light die scratch runs north from the lower curve of the C in CENT.  An area of die deterioration shows between the N and E in CENT.  Two separated die cracks show on the lower and central right wheat stalk.
