1951-D 1¢ WDDO-001          "Best Of" Variety

Description:  A strong Class V CCW spread from a pivot at approximately 6:00 shows on the letters of IGWT and also on LIBERTY.

Die Markers:  Obverse Stage A:  A long die scratch runs SSW from the upper left T in LIBERTY.  Obverse Stage B:  The die is heavily abraded and the Stage A marker is no longer visible.  Reverse Stage A:  A die scratch runs from the upper left O in ONE to the first U in PLURIBUS.  Reverse Stage B:  The Stage A die scratch is gone.  A short die crack extends north from the top of the left wheat ear.

1951-D 1¢ WDDO-002

Description: Shows an extra eyelid to the southeast.

Die Markers: Obverse: The obverse is also an RPM which is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1951-D 1¢ WRPM-021. Stage A: A mostly E-W oriented die scratch runs between the central 5 and into 1 in the date. Light, E-W oriented die scratches show to the left of the mint mark and through the left side of the date. Similar E-W oriented die scratches show below the chin. Light die scratches run east from the front of Lincoln’s nose, eyebrow and forehead. Light, SW-NE oriented die scratches run through the TRU in TRUST. A strong die gouge shows at the rim NE of the R in TRUST. Stage B: All Stage A die markers except for the doubled eye are worn away. The doubled eyelid is much less visible in this die stage and is nearly worn away. A light die clash shows in front of the neck. A die crack curves NW above the back of the eyebrow. A faded series of SW-NE oriented die scratches show behind most of Lincoln’s lower bust. Light, SW-NE oriented die scratches show on the neck below the ear. Stage C: All previous die stage markers are extremely weak or worn away except for the die crack NW of the eyebrow, which now joins a strong E-W oriented die crack running through the central forehead. The doubled eyelid is essentially invisible in this die stage. A faded die gouge shows to the right of the Y in LIBERTY. Reverse: Stage A: Scattered concentric die scratches show below the UM in UNUM. A light die scratch curves SE from the central crossbar of the E in ONE. Light, concentric die scratches show to the SE of OF. Stage B: Numerous NW-SE die scratches show throughout many areas of the reverse. A long, NW-SE oriented die scratch runs between and below the I and B in PLURIBUS. A series of die gouges show right of the E in UNITED. Scattered die gouges show in the field below the RIC in AMERICA. More die gouges show between the N and T in CENT. Stage C: A pair of die gouges show below and between the IC in AMERICA. A die gouge shows along the lower left edge of the right wheat stalk, SE of the last S in STATES. A series of NW-SW oriented die scratches run through the upper T in CENT.

1951-D 1¢ WDDO-003  

Description:  Doubling shows as an extra eyelid to the southeast of the normal eyelid.  

Die Markers:  Obverse:  A large die gouge shows to the right of the top of the nose.  A series of light concentric die scratches run through the date area.  A short, but heavy die gouge shows to the south of Lincoln’s chin.  A vertical die scratch runs in front of the chin.  A series of diagonal die scratches show in the field to the right of Lincoln’s forehead.  Light, parallel die scratches run SSE from the lower right edge of the S in TRUST.  A series of light, concentric die scratches show on Lincoln’s lower lapel and shoulder fold.  Reverse:  A light, vertical die scratch shows to the right of the left wheat tip.  A long die scratch runs south from the second U in UNUM.  Areas of die damage show inside the lower opening of the O in ONE.  Light, concentric die scratches run through the letters O and N in ONE.  A short die gouge and a separate, light die scratch run north from the upper E in CENT.

Description: Extra eyelid south of the primary eyelid. 

Die Markers: Obverse: The obverse of this variety is also a repunched mint mark that is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1951-D 1¢ WRPM-048. A strong series of die cracks show NW of the back of the eye and across Lincoln’s temple. A long die crack runs mostly NE into Lincoln’s lower bust left of the VDB initials. Reverse: Die cracks and chips show on the upper E in ONE. A die gouge shows to the right of the lower N in CENT. Heavy die cracks show on the T in CENT.

Description:  Doubling shows as an extra eyelid to the southeast of the normal eyelid.  

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is an RPM listed in the Wexler files as 1951-D 1¢ WRPM-104.  A light diagonal die scratch shows in the field well north of the T in LIBERTY.  A small die gouge (dot) shows to the right of the upper U in TRUST.  A light die crack runs mostly north from the top of Lincoln’s ear where it is met by a second die crack running east into Lincoln’s forehead.  A light die crack runs north from the upper left edge of Lincoln’s lapel.  A die crack runs west over the top of the V in the VDB initials before turning northwest and running through the back of Lincoln’s bust.  Reverse:  A die gouge (dot) shows SSW of the P in PLURIBUS.  A die gouge (dot) shows inside the opening of the O in ONE.  A short die scratch runs north from the upper diagonal crossbar of the N in UNITED.  Light vertical die scratches run through the second T in STATES.

Description:  Class V doubling shows on the lower letters in LIBERTY.  

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Stage A:  Vertical die scratches run through the letters T and Y in LIBERTY.  Parallel die scratches run northwest from between the 9 and 5 in the date.  A series of diagonal die scratches show to the left of the 1 in the date.  A vertical die gouge shows between the upper I and N in IN.  A faded diagonal die scratch shows southeast of the N in IN.  Multi-directional die scratches run below GOD.  Light diagonal die scratches run between the lower E in WE and the first T in TRUST.  Diagonal die scratches run through the letters UST in TRUST.  Stage B:  Most Stage A die markers are extremely weak or worn away.  Faded diagonal die scratches show below Lincoln’s chin.  Light diagonal die scratches show to the southwest of the first T in TRUST.  Reverse:  Stage A:  A series of nearly vertical die scratches show to the right of the left wheat tip.  A strong die scratch runs WNW over the upper N in ONE.  A strong series of diagonal die scratches show to the right of the E in ONE.  Diagonal die scratches show inside the openings of the letters C and E in CENT.  Nearly vertical die scratches show around the letters U and N in UNITED.  Stage B:  Reverse die changed.  A series of diagonal die scratches run between the left wheat tip and the E in E PLURIBUS.  A die scratch runs south from the lower N in UNUM.  A series of vertical die scratches run through the lower E in ONE.  A mostly vertical die scratch shows to the right of the T in CENT.  A series of mostly horizontal die scratches run through the letters in STATES and the letters ICA in AMERICA.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also listed as WRPM-078 (formerly listed by John Wexler as OMM #2 before the original Wexler files were transferred to CONECA and originally listed in The RPM Book by Wexler/Miller in 1983 as RPM#15).  Die scratch on lower front of vest south of 1.  Reverse:  Strong die scratch through the right wheat stem northeast to right of the second A in AMERICA.

Description:  A doubled eyelid shows to the southeast of the normal eyelid.  

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also a minor RPM listed in the Wexler RPM files as 1951-D 1¢ WRPM-105.  Vertical die scratches run north from the bridge of Lincoln’s nose.  A die gouge (dot) shows northeast of the upper 9 in the date.  Concentric die scratches show in the field above the date.  A diagonal die scratch runs along the upper tail of the 9 in the date.  A series of vertical die scratches show to the right of Lincoln’s mouth.  Multidirectional die scratches show through and around the letters ERTY in LIBERTY.  Reverse:  A series of mostly horizontal die scratches show to the right of the E in ONE.  Mostly horizontal die scratches run through the C in CENT.  A strong, “X” shaped die scratch pattern shows to the left of the T in CENT.  A series of die chips show on the lower right edge of the T in CENT.  A die chip shows on the central left wheat stalk northwest of the U in UNITED.  A horizontal die scratch connects the lower O in OF with the lower first A in AMERICA.

Description: Tripled eyelid to the southeast.

Die Markers: Obverse: The obverse is also an RPM which is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1951-D 1¢ WRPM-014. Stage A:  NNW-SSE oriented die scratches run in front of the eyebrow and through the nose with one particularly long die scratch extending into the 9 of the date.  Numerous, NNW-SSE oriented die scratches run from the underside of the chin into and left of the 1 in the date. The previously mentioned die scratches are overlaid by a single SW-NE oriented die scratch left of the 1 in the date.  A NW-SE oriented die scratch shows in the field right of the last T in TRUST.  Numerous light die scratches run NW from Lincoln’s upper back, SE and left of the Y in LIBERTY.   Stage B: Most of the Stage A die markers are extremely weak or worn away. Traces of the die scratches under the nose and through the 9 in the date are still visible. A long, curved die crack shows on the central bust, NE and above the VDB initials.  The extra eyelids are no longer clearly visible and are mushy in appearance.  Reverse: Stage A (First Reverse):  A light die crack runs to the rim from the upper left wheat at approximately 9:30.  A pattern of die damage shows inside the C in CENT. A die gouge shows along the central left edge of the right vertical bar of the N in CENT.   Stage B (Second Reverse): Two, light die scratches run north from the left wheat tip.  A short SW-NE oriented die scratch grazes the upper right edge of the C in CENT.  Concentric die scratches run through the last A in AMERICA.  A long die scratch runs SE from the central left arm of the last A in AMERICA.

A die scratch runs SW from the lower B in LIBERTY. A die gouge shows in the field below and between the TY in LIBERTY. Numerous light die scratches show above the TY in LIBERTY and behind the head. A stronger die scratch runs along the back of the hair, NE of the Y in LIBERTY. A tiny die gouge (dot) shows behind Lincoln’s lower hair. Stage B: Most Stage A die markers are faded, but visible. Reverse: Stage A: A die gouge (dot) shows below the lower curve of the C in CENT. A series of die scratches run ENE from the lower opening in the C in AMERICA. A pair of light, but long die scratches run ENE from the upper right corner of the N in CENT into the upper right wheat stalk. A N-S oriented die scratch shows at the base of the upper opening of the N in CENT. Stage B: Most Stage A die markers are still visible.

Description: D/D Tilted

Die Markers: Obverse: This die is also an RPM which is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1951-D 1¢ WRPM-100. A series of light die scratches run SE from the bowtie along the font of the lower bust, left of the 1 in the date. A small “hook-like” gouge runs north from the top of the 9 in the date. A die scratch runs SE from the mouth. Whisker-like die scratches run generally SE from beneath the tip of the nose. A strong, mostly E-W oriented die scratch runs between the S and T in TRUST. A long, SW-NE oriented die scratch parallels the back of the bust below the TY in LIBERTY. Numerous, NW-SE oriented die scratches run through the BERTY in LIBERTY. Reverse: E-W die scratches run through and below PLURIBUS. Numerous, mostly E-W oriented die scratches show in the field to the NE of the C in CENT. A long die scratch runs ENE from the lower left wheat stalk, through the letters of OF and the AM in AMERICA before ending in the lower first S of STATES. Overlapping die scratches run in two directions through and above the TES in STATES.

Description:  Doubling shows as two closely spaced doubled eyelids to the southeast of the normal eyelid.  The distinction between the two eyelids is not visible by Stage B.  

Die Markers:  Obverse:  Stage A:  Vertical die scratches run through the date area and left of the 1 in the date.  A concentric die scratch shows at the rim between the D in GOD and the W in WE.  Vertical die scratches show in front and back of Lincoln’s head.  Vertical die scratches run through the letters ERTY in LIBERTY and down to the back of Lincoln’s bust.  Stage B:  Most Stage A die markers are extremely weak or worn away.  The concentric die scratch at the rim between the D in GOD and W in WE is still visible.  Remnants of the vertical die scratches through the letters T and Y in LIBERTY are still visible.  Remnants of the vertical die scratches from Lincoln’s lower bust are visible.  A light die crack shows over the right side of the VDB initials.  Stage C:  The die crack over the VDB initials now extends toward the rim through the back of Lincoln’s bust.  The concentric die scratch at the rim between the D in GOD and W in WE is weakly visible.  Remnants of the vertical die scratches through the letters T and Y in LIBERTY and the back Lincoln’s lower bust are weakly visible.  Reverse:  Stage A:  Multi-directional die scratches show in the opening of the C in CENT.  Die gouges show in the lower opening of the E in CENT.  A curved die scratch runs through the lower T in CENT.  A long die scratch runs from the F in OF to the first S in STATES.  A series of distinctive, curved die scratches run through the letters ERICA in AMERICA.  Stage B:  Reverse die changed.  Two die gouges (dots) show in the field to the south of the I and U in PLURIBUS.  A die gouge (dot) shows inside the lower O in ONE.  A die gouge (dot) shows to the northwest of the C in CENT.  Vertical die scratches show to the right of the upper T in CENT.  A series of vertical die scratches run north above the letters NIT in UNITED.  A light die scratch runs south from the lower right edge of the O in OF.  Stage C:  All Stage B die markers are visible, but weaker.  A die gouge (dot) shows to the south of the M in UNUM.  Die chips show on the lower right edge of the T in TRUST.  Three die gouges (dots) show to the left of the O in OF.

Die Markers:  Obverse:  The obverse is also a minor RPM listed in the Wexler RPM files as 1951-D 1¢ WRPM-106.  A concentric die scratch shows at the rim right of date from 4 to 5 o’clock.  Horizontal die scratches show between the letters N in IN and the G in GOD.  A concentric die scratch shows at the rim above WE.  A light, horizontal die scratch connects the lower letters in WE.  A series of light, horizontal die scratches show in the rear shoulder fold of Lincoln’s jacket.  Reverse:  A light die scratch runs between the letters R and I in PLURIBUS.  A very light die scratch runs south from rim near the tip of the right wheat stalk.  Very light horizontal die scratches show inside the lower opening and left of the left vertical crossbar of the N in ONE.  A diagonal die scratch runs southeast from the lower central horizontal crossbar of the E in ONE.  A light die scratch runs SSE inside the opening of the C of cent.
